How to create a monetizable profile on TikTok?
Over the past few months, TikTok has quickly become THE social network of the moment.
While many of us have simply spent many (too many) hours scrolling through our "for you page", some people have managed to take advantage of this new network to develop their online income.
And I'm not just talking about the TikTok stars who became famous overnight thanks to the social network.
Because there are actually several ways to make money on TikTok, by developing an existing business or simply by monetizing your audience.
Here is an overview of the best techniques.
6 ways to make money on TikTok
1. Partnerships / Influencer marketing
The most common way people make money on TikTok is through influencer marketing.
In fact, this is also the case on many other platforms, like Instagram or YouTube.
Simply explained, influencer marketing is about promoting different brands on your videos. Brands with which, of course, you have signed a partnership.
And you don't have to be Charli and Dixie from Amelio to take advantage of it... although you will of course need to have a fairly large audience for brands to contact you or agree to a partnership.
Micro-influencers are very much in demand today. But being a micro-influencer also requires work and producing quality content for your audience.
In general, once your follower count starts to grow, some brands should naturally contact you. But you can also decide to do it yourself.
You will then usually be asked to promote the brand's products or services on your TikTok videos. Videos that you will be paid to publish.
And of course, the bigger your audience, the bigger your income can be. When you start out, you will probably "only" make tens of dollars.
2. The donations
I decided not to talk about the donation system in my article explaining how to earn money with your blog, simply because if some creators use this system, it is very rarely the case.
It's the opposite with TikTok, which like other platforms (YouTube, Twitch...) allows you to earn money by doing Live and collecting donations.
Especially because the advantage is that everything is directly integrated on TikTok. No need to go through an external platform, as it can be the case for example on Instagram.
How do donations work on TikTok?
Once you have a TikTok account, you can access your profile and buy Coins (which are simply virtual coins).
For example, 65 coins will cost you 1,09$.
So you can simply top up your account whenever you want.
Then, when one of the creators you follow goes live and you log in, you can send them virtual gifts, paid with your Coins.
The creator then transforms these coins into diamonds, which he can finally convert into money via PayPal.
Attention: you can only make Live on TikTok when you have at least 1,000 followers.
3. The Creator Fund
<><>
The Creator Fund is an initiative launched by TikTok that offers content creators to be paid for their creative talents.
There is no need for donations: the Creator Fund pays creators directly for their videos.
Through the TikTok Creator Fund, our creators will be able to earn additional compensation that reflects the time, attention, and dedication they put into connecting with an audience inspired by their ideas.
To be eligible to apply for the Creator Fund, you must:
- Reside in France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, or Spain
- Be over 18 years old
- Have at least 10,000 followers on your account
- Have more than 10,000 views on your videos in the last 30 days
- Post content that follows TikTok's rules (obviously) and is original
However, TikTok does not indicate how the payments are calculated. So it's hard to know in advance how much you could earn thanks to this fund.
In any case, you must publish original and attractive videos.
How to apply for the TikTok Creators Fund
1. Go directly to the TikTok application
Note: you must have a pro account (the application is done from your account)
2. Read & accept the rules and conditions
4. Sell your own products
Here, the concept is similar to other platforms like Instagram or YouTube.
It's simply about making money on TikTok by using the social network as a way to showcase your small business.
If you sell your own products or services, you can simply showcase them and talk about them in your videos.
Of course, the idea is to bring value to your audience - not just bombard them with advertising.
But used well, TikTok can be a platform that allows you to showcase your talents and what you create, and thus garner new customers.
5. Sell TikTok accounts
<><>
Another popular way to make some extra money with TikTok is to create and develop accounts and then resell them.
And this is not only popular on this social network. For example, the resale of blogs has been very popular for years.
Here, it's all about choosing a niche (i.e. a specific audience for which you create your videos), creating interesting and entertaining content, developing the account, and then reselling it at a profit.
Brands or professionals who sell products around that theme can then buy your account to profit from your audience.
If you like TikTok a lot and decipher its algorithm, and you are attracted by the idea of building communities around a specific topic, this monetization method is surely for you.
6. Manage TikTok accounts
<><>
We are now quite familiar with the concept of Community Managers or strategy consultants for social networks like Facebook and Instagram.
These jobs are now also developing for TikTok... and brands need advice!
Especially since it's still a relatively new social platform, and one that largely speaks to a fairly young audience. Something that brands may have a hard time doing.
So you can offer account management, strategy consulting, or even community management services on the app.
Whether it's thinking about what strategy to take, creating videos, or following trends, many companies would be willing to pay for your help.
So, if you have experience in the business and are a TikTok pro, this is a great time to get started.
For example, Sean Young, known for his pranks on TikTok, has now become a consultant to help brands and celebrities build their reputation on TikTok.
How to create a monetizable profile on TikTok?
As for other social networks, it's not enough to post your lunch with a few #hashtags to hope to earn followers (and then money) on TikTok.
It takes work, strategy, and most importantly, learning.
Here are some steps to follow to find an account that will allow you to monetize your audience.
- Find your niche. This is the foundation for anything related to content creation - or even any business you want to start. It's all about finding a specific topic and an associated audience that would be interested in your content. This will help you know what to publish to provide value to your audience and solve their problems.
- Create a professional account. This type of account is offered by TikTok and will give you access to information that will help you grow your account faster.
- Post relevant (and regular) content. The videos you post are of course central to your success on TikTok. And it often takes more work than you think. Publish content that your audience likes, that is unique, original, and regular.
- Build your audience. The size of your audience will determine how much you can expect to earn on this social network. Here again, the best way to build it is to create quality content... but also to have a little patience. Of course, avoid fraudulent techniques such as buying followers, which will always end up on you at some point.
How many followers do I need to earn money on TikTok?
Here again, it all depends on the method you plan to use to monetize your TikTok account.
As explained above, some methods require a minimum number of followers to be accessible. Like 1,000 followers for donations, or 10,000 for access to the Creator Fund.
For others, there is no limit or even a key number.
This is for example the case for partnerships with brands, which will depend
on the brand in question, the niche targeted by your account, your number of
subscribers, but also their engagement and the number of views on your
different videos.
